The United Kennel Club or UKC was founded in 1898. UKC is an international registry that recognizes more than 300 breeds.

UKC Gun Dog Group are dogs primarily used for hunting. Some of the breeds were used long before the advent of hunting with firearms. Today’s Gun dogs are primarily used to hunt birds as flushing dogs, pointers, setters and retrievers either on land in the water or both. Many of the original retrieving breeds had a shaggy sometimes curly coat which helped to keep the dog warm and repel water. The intelligent standard poodle has a strong swimming ability and is used as a retriever.  Poodles may also instinctively point.

Standard Poodles are split into two classes within the UKC Gun Dog Group, the Multi-colored standard poodles and the Standard Poodle (solid colors). Multi-colored standard poodles include partis, abstracts, brindles, phantoms and any poodle other than a solid colored dog.

Toy and miniature poodles are shown in the companion group.

This is a list of breeds in the UKC Gun Dog Group.
